Glass Lifting Service, Planned From the First Call to the Final Panel

A good glass lifting service makes lift day look easy. That’s because most of the work happens before the crane arrives.

Our glass lifting service covers the whole job: reading the site, choosing the right crane and vacuum lifter, sorting the paperwork, and running the lift with a certified crew while your glaziers focus on fitting. Whether it’s a single oversized slider in a backyard or a full day of structural glazing on a boutique build, we treat every panel like it can’t be replaced. Because usually, it can’t.

Narrowtech Cranes provides glass lifting services from our base in Erina across the Central Coast, Newcastle and Sydney.

What Our Glass Lifting Service Includes

When you book a wet hire glass lift with us, you’re not just getting a machine dropped at the gate. Here’s what comes with the service:

  • A conversation with someone who has run the gear, not a call centre
  • Site assessment, in person or from photos and plans, depending on the job
  • Crane and vacuum lifter matched to your panel weights and access
  • Lift plan, SWMS and the certifications your site needs
  • Ticketed riggers and certified operators on the day
  • Floor and surface protection where the crane needs to travel
  • A clean pack down, leaving the site the way we found it

How a Glass Lift Comes Together

Every job is different, but the process stays the same. Doing the same things, the same way, on every lift is how we keep our safety record where it is.

1. The First Call

It starts with a quick chat. Tell us what’s being installed, where it’s going and when. We’ll ask about panel sizes and weights, the access path from the street, and anything overhead like power lines or eaves. Many jobs can be scoped on the phone with a few photos.

2. Site Assessment

For more complex lifts, we look at the site properly. We check doorway and gate widths, ground conditions, floor finishes, slopes, overhead hazards and where the crane can safely set up. This is where we find the problems before they find us.

3. Lift Plan and Paperwork

Next we lock in the crane, the vacuum lifter and the crew, and prepare the lift plan and SWMS. If your site needs inductions, permits or specific documentation, we sort it ahead of time so the paperwork lands with the lift instead of holding it up.

4. Setup on the Day

Our crew arrives on time, walks the access path, lays protection where needed and sets the crane up on stable ground. We check the vacuum lifter, confirm the lift sequence with your glaziers and run a test lift before any panel leaves the ground properly.

5. The Lift

The operator brings each panel in slowly and under full control. The vacuum lifter holds the glass face, so your team guides the panel into its frame without carrying it or grabbing edges. Panel by panel, the install moves through the plan.

6. Pack Down

Once the last panel is in, we pack down, remove protection and leave. No ruts in the lawn, no marks on the floor, no mess for the builder to chase.

Who Uses Our Glass Lifting Service

Our glass lifting service is built around the people who actually have to get the glass in.

Glaziers and Glass Companies

You know glass. We know lifting. Teaming up means your crew stops wrestling heavy panels and starts fitting them. Glass companies across the Central Coast and Sydney use us for heavy units, overhead glass and installs where access rules out manual handling.

Builders and Project Managers

When glass is on the critical path, you need it in on the day it’s booked. We work to your program, your induction and your site rules, and we turn up when we say we will.

Homeowners and Renovators

If you’re renovating and the new glass can’t come through the front door the normal way, we can help. We work alongside your builder or glazier to plan a clean lift around finished floors, gardens and the neighbours’ fence line.

Commercial Fitout Teams

Internal glass partitions, shopfronts and office glazing often need to go in while a building is occupied. Our electric cranes run quietly with zero emissions, so we can work inside without shutting the floor down.

Glass Jobs We Lift Regularly

Our glass lifting service covers residential, commercial and civil work. Typical jobs include:

  • Oversized sliding, stacking and pivot doors
  • Fixed windows and structural glazing on feature walls
  • Skylights and roof glass, including near overhead power lines
  • Frameless glass balustrades on decks, balconies and stairs
  • Frameless pool fencing in backyards with no machine access
  • Shopfront glazing and internal office partitions
  • Large mirrors, splashbacks and feature panels in finished homes

Protecting the Glass, the Site and the People

Glass is fragile and heavy at the same time. That combination is what makes manual handling so risky. Our glass lifting service is designed to take the strain off people and keep the panel safe from the truck to the frame.

  • The vacuum lifter holds the panel by its face, keeping hands off the edges
  • Controlled crane movements reduce swing and sudden loads
  • Non-marking rubber tracks protect polished concrete, timber and tiles
  • Ticketed riggers manage the lift zone and keep people clear
  • Test lifts and pre-start checks happen on every job

The result is fewer broken panels, fewer injuries and fewer days lost to reorders.

Working Around Other Trades and Tight Windows

Glass often goes in late in a build, when every trade wants the same week. Some sites also come with strict time limits because of road access, council conditions or neighbours.

We plan for that. On one recent job, the whole lift had to be in and out within an eight-hour window. With the setup planned ahead and the crew working to a clear sequence, it was done inside the time. We coordinate with your glaziers, builder and other trades so the lift slots into the program instead of disrupting it.

If the glass delivery is running late or the frames aren’t quite ready, we’d rather know early. A quick call the day before lets us adjust the sequence, shift the start time or rebook without anyone losing a full day on site. Good communication is part of the service, not an extra.

When to Bring In a Glass Lifting Service

Not every pane of glass needs a crane. But there’s a point where carrying panels by hand stops making sense, and it usually arrives sooner than people expect. It’s worth calling in a glass lifting service when:

  • A single panel is too heavy for a small team to carry safely
  • The glass needs to go up a level, over a balustrade or onto a roof
  • The only access is through the house, down a side passage or across finished floors
  • There are overhead hazards such as power lines, eaves or trees
  • The panel is custom, expensive or has a long lead time to replace
  • The install has to happen inside a tight time window

If any of those sound familiar, a short call will tell you whether a lift makes sense and what it would involve. Sometimes the answer is that your crew can handle it. When it isn’t, you’ll know before anyone gets hurt or a panel gets broken.

Getting Your Site Ready for Lift Day

A little preparation makes the lift day faster and safer for everyone. Before we arrive, it helps if you can:

  • Clear the access path from the street to the crane setup point
  • Confirm the glass delivery time so the truck arrives when the crane is ready
  • Make sure frames, channels and fixings are installed and ready to receive the glass
  • Let neighbours know if we’ll need temporary access near a shared boundary
  • Have your glaziers on site and ready to fit as each panel lands

We’ll confirm all of this with you in the days before the lift, so nothing catches anyone out on the morning.

What Affects the Cost of a Glass Lift

Every glass lifting quote is built around the job. The main things that affect the price are:

  • The size of the crane needed for the heaviest panel and longest reach
  • How long the lift will take, from setup to pack down
  • Number of panels and how many lift positions are involved
  • Site access, including protection or extra handling equipment
  • Travel distance from our Erina yard
  • Any after-hours, weekend or tight window requirements

We price honestly and quote fast. Send through your plans or a few photos and we’ll come back with a clear number.

    Glass Lifting Service FAQs

    What is a glass lifter?

A glass lifter is a lifting device that holds a glass panel using vacuum suction pads instead of slings or clamps. It attaches to a crane or runs as a standalone machine, and lets the crew lift, tilt and rotate the panel without touching the edges. Vacuum lifters are a key part of our glass lifting service because they keep the panel stable and keep hands away from the heaviest, most fragile parts of the job.

    How are glass panels installed?

Large glass panels are usually delivered on racks, then lifted one at a time into a prepared frame, channel or set of fixings. On bigger panels, a crane and vacuum lifter carry the weight while glaziers guide the panel into place, pack and level it, then fix and seal it. Smaller panels can be installed by hand. The heavier and more awkward the panel, the more planning and lifting equipment the job needs.

How much to hire a crane for 2 hours?

Short crane hires are common for glass, especially single panels or small packages. The price depends on the crane size, travel, any minimum hire period and whether an operator and vacuum lifter are included. Many crane companies set a minimum charge, so a two-hour job may cost close to a half day. Call us with the panel details and location and we'll give you a clear quote for the time you actually need.

What size do glass panels come in?

There's no single size. Float glass is manufactured in large standard sheets, with jumbo sheets up to around 6 metres long, and then cut and processed to order. Finished panels for homes and commercial buildings can range from small fixed windows to large sliders and structural units several metres long. Size, thickness and glass type all affect weight, which is the main thing we need to know to plan the lift.

What do you call the installation of glass?

Installing glass is called glazing, and the tradespeople who do it are glaziers. Glazing covers windows, doors, skylights, balustrades, facades and internal glass. Our glass lifting service works alongside glaziers, handling the heavy lifting and placement so they can focus on fitting, fixing and sealing each panel.
